Eilthir Afghan Hounds
About
Us
The story so far..........
I (Kimberley) bought my first Afghan Hound, Risto,
in 2002 having
wanted one of my own for many years. The fixation with Afghans
started with my parent's Afghans, Sultan and Muna (see The Past), I was
only very small when we lost them, but from that point on I couldn't
seriously consider another breed.
Risto arrived in the UK from Finland in December 2003 and life hasn't
been the same since. I have often been asked why I chose a
foreign dog first off and the answer is quite simple. I liked a
certain "look" of Afghan, which I later realised is very much the
Scandinavian-look, and by very happy coincidence I came to do my PhD in
the same laboratory as Tarja Sorsa-Leslie, the owner of the Finnish
bred Ch. Sagoslottets Woodo (Wode) and Sagoslottets He-Man
(Hemmo). It was through Tarja that I found Risto, a S. Woodo
grandson, and it was love at first sight. Risto has an enviable
pedigree choc-full of multi-champions over many generations from the
very best of Scandinavian and American bloodlines. Risto displays
an almost boundless enthusiasum for the showring (not always displayed
in a productive manner), a showman extrordinaire!
We (I have rail-roaded my long suffering mother, Moira, into all of
this) started showing because Risto had been to a few shows in Finland,
with his breeder Seija, and had done quite well so we thought why not
have a go here. We had never shown dogs before. We started
with the Afghan Hound Club of Scotland's Open Show in 2004 and the
rest, as they say, is history, completely sucked into the insane world
of dogshowing.
Having been well and truely bitten by the bug in 2004 we acquired
Fauna, also from Finland, chosen for her
excellent Scandinavian
bloodlines and her proper-princess attitude! She also has a
star-studded pedigree of Scandinavian, German and American
bloodlines.
She enjoys the show atmosphere, but as a typical Afghan doesn't like to
admit it!
Moira and I have both been attending the excellent seminar series that
the
Afghan Hound Club of Scotland has been providing since October 2006
having both completed the KC requirements for breed judging (the
prescribed
seminars and the hands-on assesment). I have joined the 2008/09
committee of the Afghan Hound Club of Scotland and Moira has been
gaining experience as a show steward (AHCS Open 2007, AHCS Championship
2007 and 2008).
The next steps......
We plan to breed the first Eilthir litter
in 2009-2010. We are intent
on keeping a strong Scandinavian influence in our lines and are not
willing to compromise on movement and style. We hope that our
Afghans will be eveything
that the breed should be, and more. Watch this space...
